Authentic Communication is Love: My TEDx Experience
Stepping onto the famous “Red Dot” is a dream for many speakers, but standing on the stage at TEDxHelenenPark in Essen this past November was more than just a milestoneโit was a moment of profound connection.
In a world driven by AI, curated social media feeds, and the pressure to be “perfect,” we often lose sight of what it truly means to connect with one another. We mistake “brutal honesty” for authenticity, or we hide our true thoughts to keep the peace.
In my talk, “Why Authentic Communication Requires Love,” I took the audience back to a dinner table in Zambia in 2004, and to a pre-wedding ritual involving a stone, to explore the delicate balance between silence and speech.
Redefining Authenticity
I realized that we need to redefine what it means to be authentic. It is not just about speaking your mind regardless of the consequences. It is about:
- Courage: Navigating the discomfort of difficult conversations.
- Restraint: Understanding that listening is sometimes the most powerful form of speech.
- Love: Loving yourself enough to show up as you are, and loving the person in front of you enough to speak with intention and care.
Sharing this message with the audience in Essen was an electrifying experience. The energy in the room confirmed something I have always believed: deep down, we are all craving real, unfiltered human connection.
